Cadillac Electric Vehicle Is Coming The ELR

By Vinny O'Hare

Come meet the newest Cadillac the ELR

You guys know that I fell in love with the Converj when I saw it at the New York Auto show a few years back. Today Cadillac announced they are going to build it or something similar and it will be called the Cadillac ELR.

The innovative Cadillac Converj Concept, a dramatic luxury coupe with extended-range electric vehicle technology, is moving forward as a production car that will be called the Cadillac ELR. It uses electricity as its primary source to drive the car without using gasoline or producing tailpipe emissions. Development of the ELR is just underway, so details on performance, price and timing will be announced later.

Electric Concept Car Comes to Life as Cadillac ELR – Luxury touring coupe gets extended-range electric vehicle technology

DETROIT – The innovative Cadillac Converj Concept, a dramatic luxury coupe with extended-range electric vehicle technology, is moving forward as a production car that will be called the Cadillac ELR.

Development of the ELR is just underway, so details on performance, price and timing will be announced later.

The Cadillac ELR will feature an electric propulsion system made up of a T-shaped lithium ion battery, an electric drive unit, and a four-cylinder engine-generator. It uses electricity as its primary source to drive the car without using gasoline or producing tailpipe emissions. When the battery’s energy is low, the ELR seamlessly switches to extended-range mode to enable driving for hundreds of additional miles.

“The concept generated instant enthusiasm,” said Don Butler, vice president-Cadillac Marketing. “Like other milestone Cadillac models of the past, the ELR will offer something not otherwise present – the combination of electric propulsion with striking design and the fun of luxury coupe driving.”

Cadillac selected the name ELR to indicate the car’s electric propulsion technology, in keeping with the brand’s 3-letter international model naming convention.

The Converj Concept sparked the idea of combining the desirability of a grand touring coupe with electrification, said Ed Welburn, GM vice president, Global Design.

“There’s no mistaking it for anything but a Cadillac, an aggressive, forward-leaning profile and proportion showcases a uniquely shaped, modern vision of a personal luxury 2+2,” Welburn said.

Cadillac will reveal another new concept car on Thursday, Aug. 18, at a special event prior to the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Cadillac also recently announced it will add two new vehicles to its product lineup in 2012, the XTS large luxury sedan and an all-new luxury compact sedan codenamed ATS.

If you are looking to get a classic Cadillac then this is the auction for you. Garth Richards a collector in Nevada is auctioning off a few dozen Cadillacs that he collected over the years. He wants to find them good homes. With so many Cadillacs being auctioned at one time you are sure to get some good prices. There are over 40 Cadillacs in the collection that are up for auction.

This auction is in a few weeks so there is not much time to go see the cars before the auction. Looks like it will be a lot of fun. For more on the details see Vintage Cadillacs Auctions. If you are going to bid good luck to you. If I had the money I would buy them all. I will try to keep you updated on the actual sales numbers if I can find them.

How Many Ways Can Cadillac Be Spelled?

This week I was checking some stats on the site and I discovered that people do a lot of searching for Cadillacs. I also noticed that a lot of people do not know how to spell Cadillac. I came up with about a dozen ways people spell it. Some are the way it sounds but some are not even close. Here is the list, if you can think of other ways leave it in the comment box. I would be glad to hear them.

Over the years Missy has helped me keep this site going. She is also one of the nicest people going. She is in this contest and I am trying to get her more votes. If you feel like doing me a favor just click on her page and click the yellow vote button.  You can do it once a day until the contest is up. I would consider it a huge favor and thanks in advance.

Earles 1985 Cadillac Limo

By Vinny O'Hare

Our friend Earle has a new baby. Here is his email and you can see the excitement he has to add this to his collection.
We managed to get the new addition to the fleet home this week. Have learned that it is a Hess & Eisenhardt built Park Hill model six door funeral home limo. It is a 1985 Fleetwood Brougham stretch and is the last of the full size rear wheel drive Caddies. All other models in ’85 are front wheel drive, and in ’86 every model was FWD.

This vehicle is 21.3 feet long, is, as far as I can determine about a 8.5 on a scale of 10. There are minor bumper dings both front and rear (21.3 feet long, remember?) and the hood either needs painting or buffing and there is one dime size rock chip on left rear quarter that needs attention. Everything except the power antennae works – I have the same problem with the Flower Car, must be somewhat common.

I plan to take it in to get the mechanicals checked and if all is good, then have the body shop see about the hood and chip. I think I’ll call the minor bumper dings “age appropriate patina.”

Look forward to turning a few heads with this beauty when it is returned to it’s former glory. I have decided to name it “Black Velvet II”.

As I am told the car was purchased new and used exclusively by a funeral home in Doylestown PA. It was taken from regular service fifteen years ago but kept garaged and maintained for occasional use. In 2010 it was sold or traded and found it’s way to a dealership in Cherry Hill NJ where it was purchased by the first owner after coming out of service, in Columbia PA. He made some age related repairs, new battery, a/c condenser, belts. I found the car advertised on eBay and after three days of research and internal struggle between pros and cons I took the Buy It Now option and became the second owner since it was taken out of service. My brother and I made the round trip to PA and the car now resides in southern NH where I plan to freshen it up, attend to a few details and show it along with my 1978 McLain Flower Car.

The stretch was done by Hess & Eisenhardt also known as Sayers & Scovill (S&S) from Cincinnati OH. Through a number of acquisitions and mergers the S&S name still builds coach-built cars on Cadillac chassis’s under the name of Accubuilt.

This vehicle is a 1985 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham stretch six door family limousine built for the funeral home industry. The 1985 Brougham is the last of the full size Caddies with rear wheel drive. All other models in ’85 were front wheel drive and in 1986 all models were fwd. The car has 28 thousand miles and rides and drives like a new automobile. The exterior is all black with a black vinyl, textured roof. The interior is blue leather throughout and in excellent condition. Every option on the car with the single exception of the power antenna works. Once I have the the all clear from the shop and know that everything is as good as it looks, I plan to take it to local shows, any Professional Car Society (PCS) shows I can make and use it for the fun and head turning ability I am sure it will bring to the table.
